Hikurangi Maunga stands in the Raukumara ranges in the North Island of Aotearoa and is the tallest non-volcanic peak in the North Island. According to Maori legend, when the demi-god, Maui, fished up the giant fish which became the North Island, Hikurangi was the first point to emerge from the sea. It is said that his waka (canoe) now rests on this maunga.
