Maunganui or Mauao is located in the east coast of Aotearoa - New Zealand, near Tauranga. According to Maori legend, Mauao was one of three maunga that lived in the Hautere forest over looking the Tauranga moana. The other two maunga were named Ōtanewainuku and Pūwhenua. Mauao (who was a nameless maunga at the time) was in love with Pūwhenua, however she was in love with Ōtanewainuku. Absolutely devastated and hopeless, the nameless maunga pleaded with the patupaiarehe (people with magical powers) to weave a magical rope and pull him into the ocean where he could drown his sorrows. The patupaiarehe agreed and proceeded to drag him to the sea, carving out the Waimapu (weeping waters) river along the way. As they were approaching the ocean, day began to break causing the patupaiarehe (who are people of the night) to flee back into the forest. Before they fled, they named the maunga Mauao, which means 'caught in the morning light'.
